Description
Equine veterinarian – ambulatory, racetrack, performance, reproduction
HorsemedSA Hills Equine Clinic – Echunga, South Australia (Adelaide Hills region)
HorsemedSA is a dedicated team of highly qualified equine veterinarians with extensive experience including a boarded specialist surgeon and multiple membership holders. We are the largest equine practice in South Australia and are proud to be privately owned and operated.
THE PRACTICE: Our Hills clinic operates from a 24-acre facility located in Echunga in the picturesque Adelaide Hills.
We are both ambulatory and clinic-based, committed to delivering high quality and compassionate care for horses throughout the Adelaide Hills and surrounding regions. Our practice values teamwork and ensuring a supportive clinic environment and we have a strong emphasis work life balance. Our vets work a 4.5 day week, rarely work outside of the hours of 9-5:30 (except when on call) and receive time off in lieu of weekend and public holidays worked. Our on call commitments are modest, with either a 1 in 6 or 1 in 7 roster depending on vet numbers. Vets are well supported with numerous well trained veterinary nurses and administration and reception staff.
The facility includes patient stabling, yards and paddocks, riding arena with dedicated trot up/lunging area and 2 excellent stocks for standing surgery, dental and reproductive examinations. We are equipped with all the modern portable equipment including 5 digital radiography machines, multiple video endoscopes, multiple ultrasound machines (orthopedic/medical and reproduction), shock wave therapy, motorized dental equipment and an overground endoscope.
The clientele and caseload is a genuine mix of most equestrian activities including racetrack practice, sport horses, pleasure horses and reproductive work. The Adelaide Hills has a growing population of equestrian and pleasure horses. Our practice is heavily involved in the racing industry, as well as the performance horse world (strong opportunities to gain experience at the races, the Adelaide 5* horse trials and numerous other local and international events).
The Hills clinic is well supported by Horsemed’s other practice Morphettville Equine Clinic, a specialist surgical facility located 45 minutes away which includes a board-certified surgeon and team of 6 equine veterinarians. The two clinics work closely together and support one another, and there is the potential for involvement across both clinics. Having our specialist facility so close by means there is no expectation to hospitalize those tricky overnight cases which ruin your sleep – referral is at your fingertips but you can remain in touch with the case.
The Hills practice has had a stable team of 7 experienced Equine Veterinarians for a number of years. Unfortunately, we are having to replace 2 of these highly valued members this year, however neither role is being vacated due to circumstances related to the role or our practice.
OUR AREA: The Adelaide Hills is a stunning region, known for its food and drink, festivals and affordable cost of living. Several of our vets live in Adelaide city and commute daily, only staying in the Hills when on call. Adelaide is a vibrant city with world class beaches, amazing sporting culture, a fantastic family-friendly lifestyle and relatively affordable housing.
THE POSITION: This role is a full-time Equine Vet (38 hours per week - 4.5 days) and includes both ambulatory and clinic-based cases. The case load is varied and includes routine farm calls, lameness examinations, PPE, general surgery, racetrack work and reproduction (natural, chilled and frozen AI). As we are losing two team members, the opportunity exists to tailor the position for the right candidate (e.g. primarily racehorse/performance horse work, complex lameness workups vs a more ambulatory role, plus or minus a focus on reproduction during the season)
- Afterhours is an even 1 in 7 rota, with generous afterhours bonuses paid for every afterhours attendance.
- Competitive renumeration that would reflect experience.
- Fully equipped work vehicle (also for reasonable personal use) and mobile phone provided.
- Strong CPD support and mentoring. There is a good opportunity to develop skills in sports medicine/lameness, reproduction, medicine, surgery and imaging.
- Full EVA/ AVA Membership, and VSB registration is included and a generous annual CPD allowance is provided.
Applicants with all levels of experience will be considered. The position could be tailored to suit your own professional interests. There is scope to grow and develop areas of the business. Partnership opportunities could be considered for the right candidate.
