SmallBatch Pets
is excited to add a passionate, driven VP of Operations to our team who has demonstrated leadership abilities and exceptional skillsets rooted in establishing business process in: raw material vendor management, purchasing, supply chain, logistics, production forecasting, quality control, recall best practices, and contract manufacturing (co-man)management. In addition, we are seeking an entrepreneurially minded, self-starting team player who can help build our rapidly growing business by implementing best-in-class operational business processes through cross-functional executive collaboration.

Several qualities are required to be successful in this role: a strategic mindset to lead all operational aspects of a rapidly-growing business; the ability to manage competing priorities; strong project management to ensure coordination and complete follow-through beginning to end with both internal and external partners; excellent interpersonal skills, enabling strong working relationships with both internal team members and external business partners; organization and attention to detail; flexibility to adjust quickly to changing business needs or market trends while ensuring thorough execution of all critical tasks; ability to manage and set realistic and reasonable expectations; strong communication and ability to adjust communication style to all audiences, from the board of directors to all levels and departments within the organization.

Role Responsibilities

Lead Production Infrastructure Development and Production Planning Across 3PL and Co-Man Network:

  • Establish streamlined processes to manage production of 100+ unique SKUs across a network of third-party production partners by implementing systems and protocols to prioritize product integrity, ensure consistent quality, and provide visibility into production
  • Ensure long-term production capacity for all product categories, in both production and development
  • Create KPIs and metrics to track, evaluate, and manage co-man production partner performance, identifying areas for improvements within production and quality
  • Identify and onboard additional third-party production partners needed for growth or specific capabilities required by new or existing product lines
  • Ensure third-party logistics (3PL) warehouse partners are sufficient for long-term needs of the business

Lead Forecasting and Order Fulfillment

  • Develop strategic plan for worldwide product fulfillment as company continues to grow, ensuring capability to scale
  • Identify and solve for opportunities to enhance fill rates, ensuring growing customer demand is met while optimizing working capital requirements to manage costs of carrying inventory

Lead Procurement of Raw Materials & Packaging

  • Implement systems to forecast raw material and packaging needs
  • Ensure vendors are aligned to meet production needs
  • Expert knowledge of packaging requirements and specifications for pet food, critical in both innovation and selection of new packaging suppliers
  • Lead selection of packaging partners to ensure adherence to brand standards for both new and existing products
  • Lead the team to ensure the network of raw material suppliers is managed by providing guidance on negotiating pricing, ensuring product quality based on SmallBatch brand and product specifications, and planning order quantities

Lead Quality Control Process Development

  • Lead the quality team in driving continuous improvement of quality standards for risk mitigation throughout the supply chain, from procurement to sales
  • Provide strategic guidance to further define and implement quality control procedures to manage recall risks and ensure SmallBatch strict adherence to production standards
  • Formalize recall procedures and ensure all stakeholders are trained on proper protocol

Strategic Oversight and Leadership

  • Develop KPIs and metrics for managing margins to drive profitability
  • Ensure cost savings throughout the supply chain without sacrificing quality or brand standards
  • Regularly review procurement, production, storage, and logistics to identify opportunities and develop creative solutions for margin enhancement within all aspects of the supply chain 
  • Lead operational updates of the business in executive, investor, and board meetings

Ideal Candidate Attributes

  • 5+ years of experience in the food industry with direct experience of food production and supply chain management
  • Knowledge of FDA regulations 
  • Understanding of organic protein and vegetable markets and the key players within each
  • Entrepreneurial team player with the ability to multi-task in fast-paced environment, while maintaining acute attention to detail
  • Impeccable written and verbal communication, paired with ability to listen and improve based on feedback
  • Uncompromising ethical orientation
  • High level of emotional intelligence, demonstrated by ability to interact with all personality types and behaviors, while driving results
  • This is a very hands-on position that may require things like data entry, setting up systems
