Description
Large Animal / Dairy Veterinarian - Smithton, North-West Tasmania
Are you an experienced large animal vet with a passion for dairy? We are currently searching for additional Veterinary support over our peak season (September - November) and we'd love to hear from you!
We're a small but rapidly growing clinic based in Smithton, a rural farming town in the far north-west of Tasmania. You'll have rolling green hills on your doorstep, beaches 10–20 minutes away, and beautiful rainforests to explore on your days off. Smithton offers the essentials - shops, schools and day-to-day services - with Burnie less than an hour away for larger facilities including an airport with regular flights to Melbourne.
Our caseload is predominantly dairy (around 80%), with primarily spring calving herds from smaller family-run farms through to large corporate operations. The remaining work includes beef (around 15%) and a small mix of small ruminants, equine, and the occasional dog vaccination (around 5%). We're fortunate to have many long-standing clients who are excellent to work with, and we're continuing to grow - so it's the perfect time to expand our veterinary team.
Why join us?
- Supportive team of experienced vets, technicians and admin staff.
- Modern cattle equipment and a well-resourced clinic
- A collaborative team where your skills and ideas are valued
- Shared seasonal on-call roster with minimal call-outs for much of the year
- Close knit community and clientele
What we offer
Supportive, down-to-earth team: three full-time vets, experienced admin staff, FIFO locums, and access to vets across our other branch clinics (The Vet Group). We also have technicians who can join you for jobs that require an extra hand.
Well-equipped clinic, including two lameness tipper crushes, a teat-sealing trailer, bull fertility testing equipment, BCF ultrasound units, in-house Parasight (worm egg counts), and a Mastatest machine - with scope to add more.
Varied cattle caseload year-round within a team that has a strong focus on a preventative approach to dairy health.
Seasonal on-call roster shared between vets, with minimal call-outs for much of the year outside spring calving (Aug–Oct).
Whether you're looking for your next permanent role or a rewarding locum opportunity, you'll enjoy meaningful large animal work, fantastic clients, and a team that genuinely enjoys what they do. If you're available for a short-term placement or recurring locum work throughout the year, we'd love to connect with you!
