A little about Pilchuck Veterinary Hospital - Equine Internship
Our team of enthusiastic specialists and ambulatory practitioners supports a rotating internship combining hospital and ambulatory work. Mentorship would come from boarded surgeons, internist, and veterinarians that have extensive experience in working closely with interns for case management. We have the only facility with multiple boarded equine specialists in the area. Case load consists mostly of equine patients with occasional small ruminants and camelids. After hours on call schedule is split among interns with pre-determined weekend time off and protected weekday/weeknight time off.
The goal of our internship program is to provide knowledge and confidence for our interns to join private practice or a residency program. Interns have primary case responsibility under the supervision of a senior clinician for the duration of the internship. The interns perform daily assessment of their cases, complete medical records, present cases in daily rounds, perform diagnostics, administer anesthesia, assist in surgery and medicine procedures and participate in monthly journal club. The interns on ambulatory service are under the direction of our doctors on all cases such as dentals, lameness exams, reproductive work, podiatry, etc. Interns will be fully competent to address aspects of patient care at an either primary role, or with indirect supervision. It’s our preference to have 3 Interns each year, allowing us to balance training goals and schedule for a quality experience.
Facility includes two full surgical suites with pillow recovery systems, a standing procedure/surgery room, a reference-quality laboratory, a covered lameness evaluation arena, and several treatment areas. The main barn has stall space for 15 in-patients with an additional 3 climate-controlled ICU stalls and a 4-stall isolation facility. Stalls can be converted into a fully operational NICU. The hospital is well equipped with two SurgiVet anesthesia machines with ventilators, complete anesthesia monitoring equipment, extracorporeal shock wave, digital radiology, digital ultrasound, 600 mA radiology, arthroscopy, laparoscopy, ASIF bone plating instruments, PRP, IRAP, Pro-Stride, and a 0.3 Tesla MRI. Clients also have access to acupuncture, chiropractic and Chinese herbal medicine through our integrative medicine and rehabilitation center. We offer the services of clinical pathology, cardiology, ophthalmology, dermatology, and radiology on a consultation basis with board-certified specialists.

Interns will also gain experience managing preventative care, emergency and critical care, reproductive cases, and internal medicine. Mentorship is centered on helping each intern build confidence in their developing skill set while providing the knowledge and practical experience needed to complete the year prepared to practice independently and hit the ground running.
Our high-capacity hospital is equipped with 88 stalls, a dedicated surgical suite, multiple treatment rooms, a radiology room, and a jogging track. This environment provides interns with the resources and case exposure necessary to develop their clinical skills throughout the year.
Interns will have the opportunity to develop and expand their skills in preventative and general care, including vaccination, nutrition, dentistry, castrations, and routine wellness care. They will also gain valuable experience in emergency and case management, client communication, and developing comprehensive treatment plans under the guidance of several experienced senior veterinarians.
On-call responsibilities provide interns with opportunities to strengthen their confidence, clinical decision-making, and independence while ensuring they always have access to support and guidance from senior associates. Our goal is for each intern to finish the program with the practical skills, knowledge, and confidence necessary to transition successfully into independent equine practice.
Bovine Division
Our Bovine department combines mobile ambulatory field service with in-hospital medicine and surgery. Interns are supported by experienced large animal veterinarians with strong backgrounds in herd health, emergency care, reproduction, lameness, and surgical management. Mentorship is hands-on, structured, and progressive throughout the year.
Our hospital specializes in bovine lameness, internal medicine, and surgical cases, attracting patients from across the nation. This provides interns with exposure to a wide variety of unique and complex surgical and internal medicine cases.
Our caseload consists primarily of bovine patients, including commercial herds and individual producers, with additional exposure to small ruminants. Services include herd health consultation, reproduction, lameness evaluation, emergency care, surgery, and preventative medicine.
The goal of our internship program is to provide the knowledge, clinical judgment, and confidence needed to enter private practice or pursue advanced training. Interns maintain primary case responsibility under supervision, perform daily case assessments, complete medical records, participate in rounds, conduct diagnostics, assist with surgical procedures, and engage in herd-level decision making.
