Veterinary Technician - OncologyFull-time: 4x10 shifts Monday-Thursday
Heart of Texas
Round Rock, TX
Compensation negotiable based on credentials and experience with an hourly pay rate starting at $23-26/ hour. The actual rate offered will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
About You
You’re a compassionate, detail-oriented veterinary technician who thrives in specialty medicine. You’ll provide oncology nursing care, support the oncology team, and communicate professionally with clients (in person, by phone, and in writing) while upholding our mission and core values. You bring strong nursing skills-including anesthesia monitoring and clinical pathology-comfort with diagnostics/radiology, and experience with (or willingness to learn) safe chemotherapy handling and administration. You prioritize well under pressure and maintain calm, professional composure.
Your Experience & Skills
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Animal husbandry and inpatient care (walking, feeding, cleaning, and medication administration)
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; consistently provides excellent customer service
- Strong technical veterinary nursing skills and comfort with specialty-hospital workflows
- Detail-oriented with strong follow-through and accuracy (including documentation and patient care tasks)
- Able to work independently on assigned tasks; goal-oriented and accountable
- Able to multitask and work well under pressure in an environment with continuously changing priorities
Education and Experience:
Required:
- 2-3 years of previous experience as a veterinary technician
- Prior customer service experience
Preferred:
- Associate degree in Veterinary Technology
- Credentials: RVT/CVT/LVT (licensed veterinary technician)
Job Responsibilities:
General:
- Prepare patient records; admit and discharge patients as assigned.
- Handle telephone calls and schedule appointments as needed.
- Promote a positive work environment and show commitment to the hospital mission, vision, and core values.
- Maintain required logs (e.g., controlled drugs, radiology, surgery).
- Ensure the working area is stocked with supplies.
- Maintain cleanliness in the hospital environment.
Nursing/Patient Care:
- Assess patient status; obtain patient history; perform technician exam; and assist the veterinarian in the exam room.
- Monitor changes in patient condition and report them to the veterinarian on duty.
- Perform emergency patient care as needed.
- Calculate medication doses and administer medications via all routes, including CRI medications.
- Perform cystocentesis as directed.
- Place urinary catheters as required.
- Perform excellent venipuncture for phlebotomy and IV catheterization.
- Administer IV/SQ fluids as needed.
- Chart appropriately in the patient’s medical record using correct medical terminology, symbols, abbreviations, and spelling.
- Apply a variety of bandages.
Laboratory Procedures:
- Operate laboratory equipment in the veterinary practice, including microscopes, hematology analyzers, and chemistry analyzers, among others.
- Perform microscopy for blood, cytology, and urine analysis, among others, as needed.
- Perform in-house testing such as PCV/TP, heartworm, flea/tick, FeLV/FIV, SNAP tests, etc.
Radiology Duties:
- Observe all required safety protocols for capturing radiologic images.
- Properly obtain required diagnostic radiographs, including basic contrast studies.
- Properly utilize the ultrasound machine for guidance with sample collection.
- Properly obtain diagnostic CT images, including use of contrast as directed.
Anesthesia/Surgical Duties:
- Perform pre-operative physical examination.
- Assist with creation of anesthetic plan; calculate and administer all induction medications.
- Operate a variety of anesthetic machines and circuits, including rebreather and non-rebreather systems.
- Be proficient in intubating all species seen in practice.
- Properly induce, maintain, and recover a patient from anesthesia.
- Properly operate and interpret anesthetic monitors, including ECG, BP, SpO2, ETCO2, temperature, etc.
- Maintain the anesthetic machine, including pre-op setup, checking, changing CO2 granules, and oxygen tank maintenance.
- Understand pharmacology of and use of anesthetic and analgesic medications.
- Respond in an anesthetic emergency and assist the veterinarian.
- Perform proper surgical instrument cleaning and maintenance.
- Prepare and sterilize surgical packs.
Oncology Specific Essential Functions:
- Maintain working knowledge of chemotherapy medications, protocols, side effects, and administration techniques.
- Perform chemotherapy treatments, including drug calculations and safe preparation (mixing/dispensing).
- Administer chemotherapy using safe handling techniques for biohazardous compounds via oral, intravenous, subcutaneous, or other methods.
- Handle and dispose of stocked items appropriately and clean the treatment area.
- Provide excellent client communication, including discharge instructions, chemotherapy handling risks, and potential side effects.
Physical Requirements:
- Dependable attendance is required.
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- May occasionally be required to work extended shifts or overtime under high-pressure conditions while maintaining composure.
- Ability to walk, bend, stand, and reach constantly during a minimum 8-hour day.
- Visual acuity sufficient to maintain accurate records, recognize people, and understand written directions.
- Ability to speak and hear sufficiently to understand and provide information in person and over the telephone.
- Fine motor skills adequate for utilizing office and hospital equipment (e.g., laboratory equipment, radiology equipment).
Additional Requirements:
- May be required to work holidays.
- May need to work overtime.
- Other duties as assigned.
- During slow periods, take initiative to assist the team in other departments.
